Abbracciamoci, Folleville!

Marquis Manicamp has been obsessed with the knight Folleville ever since the latter saved him from dishonor during a hunting trip. Every time he sees him, Manicamp yells at him, “Let’s embrace, Folleville!” making him feel embarrassed. As if that were not enough, Manicamp demands that Folleville marry his daughter, a girl with a lively temperament, who breaks pots and slaps, and whom Folleville considers a midget.
In a somewhat bogus historical setting with frequent threats of duel, Labiche creates one of his best-known and funniest works, to the point that the expression “Let’s embrace, Folleville!” has entered common parlance in France to denote a hypocritical friendship behind which lies conflict.
