As is often the case in vaudeville, this is a circumscribed world. No element of the outside world enters this closed and protected glass bell by way of intrusion. And it is precisely in the perfect conditions typical of a laboratory that we witness the play of desires and energies. There is no contamination that induces us to look away from that perfect world that is disintegrating. And it is at this point that the author heats up the particles until they reach the speed necessary to generate a reaction. Laughter, in Feydeau, is the result of a self-fertilising reaction…
