In a ‘fairytale’ kingdom where kings are fools, the prime minister believes that the head serves only as an ornament, princes do not keep their word, scoundrels beat their wives and aspire to nobility with the approval of those in power, Prince Verdemare, one of the few honest young men left, frees a magical elf from captivity and is forced to flee to avoid the vengeance of his brothers. Wandering through the kingdom, he discovers that a large part of the population is setting sail for the Indies, having been exploited and reduced to poverty, and that the Infanta risks being sacrificed to the dragon to save everyone, in accordance with barbaric laws dating back two thousand years.
By weaving tragicomic anachronisms reminiscent of early 20th-century Spain into a medieval fairy-tale setting, Ramón María del Valle-Inclán portrays a superficial and corrupt humanity, bound by outdated traditions, where values count for nothing and personal interests almost always prevail. However, as this is a fairy tale, it culminates in a happy ending, accompanied by hearty laughter.

The text features numerous characters but is structured in such a way as to allow one or more actors or actresses to easily play multiple roles.
